A car’s transmission, both automatic and manual, handles a lot, adjusting gears and sending power from the engine to the wheels. Because its role is so important, it is crucial for drivers to keep their transmission in its best condition. Pearson Auto is here to help with some tips to keep your transmission running as long as possible.
Regular Maintenance for Your Transmission
The most important trick to preserving any car part is keeping up with regular maintenance. For your transmission, this means having it inspected and the fluid flushed every year. Additionally, if your transmission has a fluid filter, you will want that replaced annually as well, though many cars do not have them. It entirely depends on the make and model.
If you ever want to check the condition of your transmission fluid on your own, it is a simple process: while your car is idling, remove and clean your dipstick, then insert it again to get a clean sample. The fluid should be red and smell slightly sweet. If it is dark or smells rotten, definitely take your car in to have the transmission inspected.
Transmission Temperature Control
Your car’s transmission works at its best when it is not in extreme temperatures. Now, obviously, you can’t be expected to leave your car at home just because it is hot or cold outside, so there are ways to mediate the effect extreme temperatures can have. On those cold Alaska days, take the time to start your car before you need to leave. Let the engine start to warm up the transmission before you go, then take it easy when you first start driving to ensure it has time to fully warm up.
On hot days, your transmission benefits from the engine cooling system. However, you should take care not to overheat by straining the transmission’s abilities. This can be done by downshifting frequently, carrying heavy loads, or towing in a vehicle not intended for that.
Transmission Don’ts
To avoid straining your transmission, there are a few other driving don’ts to point out. If you have to use your spare tire — we’ve all done it — don’t leave it on too long. Having tires that don’t match in size puts strain on the transmission, not to mention the wheel alignment. Also, try to avoid stop and go traffic as much as you can. The consistent jerk and transition from stop to go can put a lot of wear and tear on the transmission, especially on automatic. Finally, if your car is showing signs of damage — noises, difficulty shifting gear, falling out of gear — don’t ignore it. Take it in for inspection and repair.
Pearson Auto has plenty of experience with transmissions — maintaining, repairing, and replacing — and are ready to help you with your car and your questions.
