Is the Irregular Noise My Car Making Serious?

As a seasoned driver, there have probably been times when your car made odd or unexpected noises as it runs or drives. Sometimes, you can pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from and resolve the problem easily. Other times, you may not be able to pinpoint the exact location of the noise, and you aren’t sure if it’s serious or not. Take a look at these common car noises and what they can mean.

Squealing Tires

Squealing tires is a common noise that plenty of drivers have heard before. If you notice that your tires are squealing when you turn the steering wheel, it is likely due to an underinflated tire. You should immediately check your tires’ air pressure and fill them to their appropriate PSI. If you don’t over time your underinflated tires can cause a variety of other problems for your car.

Rattling Brake Noises

If you hear a slight rattling sound when you step off the brakes, it may not necessarily mean you have a problem with your brakes. Brake pads expand because of the heat generated by the friction, and as a result, a little rattling can be normal. However, you should never hear rattling sounds when pressing down on the brake pedal, and you should not consistently hear rattling noises. If you do, it’s likely that something is wrong with your brakes.

Clunking Noises

Clunking noises are often associated with problems with the suspension system. That’s especially true if you hear the noise when driving over a speed bump, pothole, or any other kind of bump in the road. If you hear clunking or knocking noises, it can mean that your shocks or struts are worn out or that there’s a problem with another part of your car’s suspension system.

Strange Steering Noises

Another common noise comes from when a driver turns the wheel to steer the cat. Strange steering noises can indicate an issue with your steering system, or it can mean that there’s a problem down the chain in the suspension of the wheels. Since it’s hard to pinpoint the exact cause for strange steering noises, it’s best to have a professional mechanic in MD inspect your car to find out.
