Every time you start your car, it’s your spark plugs that kick start the engines. They create the titular spark to ignite the mix of air and fuel in the engine, getting your car going. Because it’s such an important part of your car, it’s crucial to keep it in good shape with regular maintenance and recognizing signs of deterioration. And in extreme weather, like Alaska’s harsh winters, spark plugs can go through extra wear and tear. The auto experts at Pearson Auto have some tips on what to look out for.
Spark Plug Wear and Tear
Spark plugs will wear down even without weather extremes. If you start to notice hesitation in your engine starting, or your engine is stalling, these can be indicative of spark plug issues. These issues can come from the plugs experiencing heat in the engine over time, deposits on the insulator or electrodes created on firing, engine vibration degrading the insulator, or the high voltage simply wearing them down.
Weather Affects Your Spark Plugs
The extreme colds of Alaska winters can put stress on and do damage to many parts of your car, including your spark plugs. You can prevent some of this with a few adjustments to your routine, and others can be managed with routine checks.
Cold Weather Damage
Cold air is denser than warmer air, so your spark plugs have to work harder to ignite the engines in the winter. It is especially difficult if the plugs are dirty, which is especially notable, as the salt, ice, and moisture that can be picked up on snowy roads can cause corrosion to the threads and terminals of the spark plugs. There is also a risk of carbon buildup if you have a habit of idling your car — for example, if you let your car ‘warm up’ before you get in to drive during the winter (as we’re all guilty of doing).
Spark Plug Damage Prevention
Luckily, you can prevent or keep a lot of this damage at bay with high quality parts and a few maintenance steps. If your spark plugs are good quality, and you take good care of the other related parts — ignition coils and wires, etc. — you’ve set yourself up with a good defense against initial damage. Limiting how much you let your vehicle idle will also prevent buildup, keeping you in a good position. Beyond that, make sure you stay on top of your inspections, and fix any problems while they’re small to avoid worse and more expensive damage later.
