5 Ways We Winterize Your Car

It may be the middle of the summer but here at Pearson Auto, we’re always thinking ahead. With Alaska’s brutal winters, you have to make sure that your car is ready to handle the tough winter conditions. Pearson Auto is here to help you winterize your car. Here are five ways we do it:

1. Check Your Battery

Cold weather is tough on your car’s battery. The chemical reactions that take place in your car’s battery to generate power are slowed down during extremely cold weather. During the winter, your engine requires more current from the battery to get the engine started. The professionals at Pearson Auto will check your car battery and ensure that it’s filled with the necessary distilled water, clean up any corrosion, and run a battery load test.

2. Change Your Wiper Blades

You need to be able to see the road clearly so you can drive safely. During the winter, salt and built-up winter precipitation can affect your ability to see. That’s why it’s important to have wiper blades that work well. Wiper blades are only good for a year, so we’ll have them replaced and top off your wiper fluid.

3. Put On Your Snow Tires

Alaska’s brutal winter conditions are no match for your snow tires. The mechanics at Pearson Auto will swap out your regular, all-season tires for your snow tires. Snow tires are made out of softer rubber than all-season tires, which allows them to retain flexibility at extremely low temperatures. They also provide more traction.

4. Check Your Four-Wheel Drive

If your car has four-wheel drive, we will ensure that it’s working properly. Before the cold weather arrives, bring your car into our Fairbanks auto shop and have us assess your car’s 4WD. We’ll make sure that the system engages smoothly and that the transmission and gear fluids are at their correct levels.

5. Change Your Oil

In order for your engine to run, it needs to be properly lubricated with oil. Cold weather reduces the oil’s effectiveness. The colder it is outside, the thicker the oil gets, and thicker oil is more difficult to circulate through the engine. To prevent this from happening, our mechanics will change your oil to one that is thinner so that it won’t become too thick to pass through the engine.
